My frist time on a root dig with the whole wellpinit school. It was hot, but was definately fun. Some of the tribal members were there to talk to us about the history of the bitter root (camas), there were lots of tools that they showed us to used to dig out the camas. We were split into different groups and we each had a chance to dig a couple of them. The tribal elders said that if it was your first time to dig a root for every year you should take your camas to them and they will bless the camas as part a cerimonial ritual that they do every year they come out to dig. They dig the camas every year because this is also one of their traditional food that they cook for get togethers or any other occasion. It's kind of sweet like a carrot, but it looks like a baby potatoe. I tried it for my frist time and it was amazing, can't wait til I get to try it cook with different ingredients to make it taste even better. We had lunch down by a lake and had barbeque salmon, hotdogs and hamburgers with lots of others snacks like chips, salad, lemonade and it was a big get-together with almost everyone on wellpinit. An amazing outing i'll miss!
